Science Fund
Membership to Fræðagarður gives opportunities for allocations from our Science Fund, but the fund is intended to be a bonus for members that is paid out once a year. In the general labour market, membership to the Science Fund is optional, however, membership is paid for all members who work for local authorities. The employer's contribution to the Science Fund for members of the state was waived in the collective agreement in 2008 in a way that the salary tariff was increased by two percent.
Grant Amount and Allocation
The grant amount is based on a deposit into the fund between January 1 and December 31, but the employer pays 1.5% of the standard salary into the Science Fund. Members who have had their fee paid into the Science Fund are allocated from the fund during the period of January to February each year. Members do not need to apply separately for an allocation from the Science Fund and receive a notification by email when payment has been made.
Fiscal Treatment
A grant from a Science Fund is pre-registered on the beneficiary's tax return and is declared for tax purposes like any other income. If members have payment receipts, which the tax considers valid as expenses against the grant, they must be returned with the tax return. Otherwise, full income tax is paid for the grant. Information on which payment receipts Skatturinn - the tax authorities - accepts as costs against grants can be found on the Skatturinn website.
